DAHLIAS, Alice's Garden

A quick post - it's a grey day and I'm conjuring up summery thoughts.

Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' towers over 'Tasagore' and 'Japanese Bishop' - pictured - All were purchased from Swan Island Dahlias, a great resource for choice dahlias.
I've planted these red and orange dahlias with dark foliage for a brilliant late-summer display.

  1. Summer indeed! And how do you avoid powdery mildew with your Dahlias? That was our downfall (and we did no overhead watering).

  2. I love Dahlias. Bishop of Llandaff is ever popular as it's stunning. I'm growing it in pots this Summer.

  3. Lovely photos. Those reds are fantastic. I've got a couple dahlias to get in as soon as it warms up a bit more. Nice blog.

  4. DP, mildew is a problem. I hand water at the very base of the plants, but still.... some years are worse than others. I often clip leaves lower leaves if/when they are simply too offensive to my eyes.

I lifted Japanese Bishop last summer because it looked pathetic and was barely blooming. I placed it in a pot in a sunny spot, where I'm hoping it will perform this year.

  6. You've got a beautiful garden, Alice. I daresay your spread is every bit as lovely as the distant ones you feature.

I have Dahlia 'Bishop's Children' a little more purple/red with the dark foliage. I love dahlias.

  8. Dahlias are the perfect "elegance meets simplicity" flower.

Daffodil, I think powdery mildew is more likely with poor air circulation, but as Alice's beautiful picture shows, you can't get that lovely cottage garden effect if you don't crowd the plants a little. Personally, I can live with a little fall powdery mildew in exchange for a summer border bursting with flowers.

  9. Those colors are so radiant--I'll definitely be looking forward to warmer weather! I've seen that golden agastache advertized but have never grown it. Something else to add to the list of plants to try.

  10. Alice, I think we lost all the today's picks. I know I've picked this post earlier today, but now my pick is gone. I lost all the messages for the March 6th including yours, a new fave and all the picks for my last 2 posts!
Anyway, your dahlias are gorgeous and I am picking this post again!

  13. Alice, your gardens are beautiful. And your pictures of them great as always. I've turned into a Dahlia lover in the last couple of years. Swan Island Dahlias isn't that far from me - maybe I can make a day trip down for their Dahlia festival.
